USAID Biodiversity and Development Handbook 2015 - Chapter 4.2: Food Security
Chapter 4.2 of USAID's Biodiversity and Development Handbook is focused on the intersection of biodiversity conservation work with food security. Chapter Four contains sections that are a primer on integration of biodiversity into key development sectors. Despite tremendous gains in food production over the past 40 years, currently 795m people do not have enough food to lead a healthy active life. That’s about one in nine people on earth, according to the World Food Programme. USAID combats food insecurity through the U.S. Government’s flagship Feed the Future initiative, among other efforts. Sustainable agriculture that is compatible with or enhances biodiversity conservation can make a major contribution to food security, as discussed in the next section.
