Amazon Deforestation Drives Malaria Transmission, and Malaria Burden Reduces Forest Clearing
Deforestation and land use change are among the most pressing anthropogenic environmental impacts. In Brazil, a resurgence of malaria in recent decades paralleled rapid deforestation and settlement in the Amazon basin, yet evidence of a deforestation-driven increase in malaria remains equivocal. We hypothesize an underlying cause of this ambiguity is that deforestation and malaria influence each other in bidirectional causal relationships—deforestation increases malaria through ecological mechanisms and malaria reduces deforestation through socioeconomic mechanisms—and that the strength of these relationships depends on the stage of land use transformation.

Challenges and Successes of One Health in the Context of Planetary Health in Latin America and the Caribbean
Latin America faces significant challenges in the last decades due to the deep social inequality associated with environmental degradation and biodiversity loss that menace the integral health of the diverse socio-ecological systems. Planetary health is crucial in Latin America and the Caribbean countries, and integrated health approaches are pivotal to mitigating climate change and should be considered as a scope of multidisciplinary collaboration under the umbrella of One Health.

Conservation Enterprises Learning Brief: Assessing the Core Assumption that Enterprise Benefits Promote Conservation Attitudes and Behaviors - Summary of Resources
One of the core assumptions in a theory of change for supporting conservation enterprises is that the benefits–both monetary and non-monetary—participants receive promote desired attitudes and behaviors toward biodiversity conservation. This brief summarizes select resources that have more systematically assessed how increased benefits have led to attitudes and behavior change. In taking a closer look at these studies, conservation enterprise teams should reflect on how they might contribute to the evidence base for this key assumption.

Democratising forest business: a compendium of successful locally controlled forest business organisations
The main purpose of this book is to present 19 case studies from 14 developing countries that show how local people have been democratising forest business. By this is meant the process of asserting collective local control through ownership and management arrangements so that the integrated needs of families, communities and indigenous peoples remain central to the business operation.

Guatemala Tropical Forest and Biodiversity Assessment
The purpose of this task was to carry out an analysis of Tropical Forests and Biological Diversity for the USAID/Guatemala Mission, as required by amendments to the Foreign Assistance Act (FAA) of 1961. Sections 118 and 119 of this Act require USAID to identify the actions needed to conserve biological diversity, including forest ecosystems, and measures for the design of programs and projects to meet this requirement.

Turning Vicious Cycles into Virtuous Ones: Pathways for USAID Action on Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated Fishing in Latin America and the Caribbean
Globally, illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing (IUUF)—or a combination of these practices—accounts for one in five fish caught in the wild. To start to illuminate the scope of IUUF in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), USAID’s Bureau of Latin America and Caribbean Office of Regional Sustainable Development (RSD) supported the convening of expert roundtables on the drivers of IUUF and what development partners can do to address them in three seascapes: the Pacific Coast of South America, the Caribbean, and Central America.

USAID Amazon Vision: 2021 Report
A healthy Amazon benefits everyone on the planet, especially those who live and work in the region. But the region faces serious threats: over the last four decades, the Amazon’s carbon uptake, biodiversity, and ecosystem productivity have declined. To address these threats and preserve the region’s ecosystems, USAID developed the Amazon Vision in 2016. This framework establishes a concerted and strategic regional response across USAID’s efforts in Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Guyana, and Suriname. This report shares progress toward the Amazon Vision’s ongoing efforts to maintain a healthy and resilient Amazon basin.
